One never knows what one will find in the offing when perusing MySpace. I probably shouldn’t be surprised by this, but lately for the first time I’m noticing that the Bulletins section is being used for announcements other than gigs, radio play information, and so on. This morning I found an ad for an apartment near a Chicago-based recording studio (“Musicians Welcome!”); a classic little black dress for sale; and an announcement from one comely young lass informing the world (our little corner of it, anyway) that she will “wash the breeding heap of socks” under her bed … tomorrow.
his is not to say the Bulletins are a waste of time. One day, amidst the announcements for shows, CDs and band merchandise, I stumbled upon a link from a DJ for a YouTube video that was of great nostalgic interest to me. It was a video of Spirit, the Brit band who gave us songs such as “Nature’s Way” and “I Got a Line On You” circa 1970:

This video is from 1986, increasing my interest because, that very same year,...

In the Event of an Event ...
We’ve discussed various ways to inform your contacts about your band, your recordings, upcoming gigs. But MySpace provides yet another way to get the word out: the Event. This option is located under the “More” tab on your MySpace profile screen. Place your cursor over the tab, select “Events” to open the Events home screen. MySpace Featured Events are displayed here, which may or may not be music-related. You also have the option of browsing existing events that have been created for the MySpace community by other members. Planning a trip, and want to find out what’s happening at your destination city? Enter the country and postal code. Looking for an activity for a specific date? Select the Start/End dates from the dropdown menu.
Now, let’s get up close and personal, with events relating to you and your profile. At the left side of the screen is the following menu:
Each of these is self-explanatory, and the middle two are particularly welcome to those of us who tend to maintain multiple reminder lists and...

I’ve spoken at length about the benefits of meeting new people via MySpace. Considering that it started out as a meeting place for like-minded people to share interests, it makes sense that it would bloom into a natural choice for a method of networking for professional endeavors as well. One recent example is something that happened as a result of an e-mail exchange between two band members of a similar genre. The music style is psychedelic; the bands are The High Dials of Montreal (http://www.myspace.com/thehighdials) and Red Plastic Buddha of Chicago (http://www.myspace.com/redplasticbuddha).
High Dial Trevor Anderson, disappointed at finding the Chicago market booked solid during the dates the band had set for their tour, decided to reach out to the MySpace Music community. His query was answered by Red Plastic Buddha leader Tim Ferguson. Already a High Dials fan, Ferguson was more than eager to do what he could to help the band pin down a Chicago date. Ferguson’s investigation led to not only a venue for The High Dials, but a chance to share the gig with them. The venue is Stereophonic Studios...

Heard the Songs? Check Out the Profile!
It’s amazing what can result from one little song. I wrote a simple, melancholy love song years ago called “Leaves” – it was released as part of a six-song acoustic solo EP called Spaghetti Midwestern. It wasn’t released on a label, it was an independent project, limited run, a modest budget for the recording, artwork, promotions, and so on. It’s still available from a few sources, myself included, though I’ve nearly run out of them and won’t do another run. Instead, I plan to re-release the six songs (with other tunes in a similar style) on a new CD next year, on Spade Kitty Records (http://www.myspace.com/spadekittyrecords) – the Chicago indie label that carries my CD with my band, The Pralines.
Anyway, now and then I still receive queries for this humble little effort, and the song “Leaves” appears to be the most popular tune on the disk. It captivated one listener so much, he decided to contact me about covering it on a CD project he was planning. The gent’s name is Ron Martin, from North Carolina, and he was planning a recording to benefit the Liddy Shriver...
