One never knows what one will find in the offing when perusing MySpace. I probably shouldn’t be surprised by this, but lately for the first time I’m noticing that the Bulletins section is being used for announcements other than gigs, radio play information, and so on. This morning I found an ad for an apartment near a Chicago-based recording studio (“Musicians Welcome!”); a classic little black dress for sale; and an announcement from one comely young lass informing the world (our little corner of it, anyway) that she will “wash the breeding heap of socks” under her bed … tomorrow.
his is not to say the Bulletins are a waste of time. One day, amidst the announcements for shows, CDs and band merchandise, I stumbled upon a link from a DJ for a YouTube video that was of great nostalgic interest to me. It was a video of Spirit, the Brit band who gave us songs such as “Nature’s Way” and “I Got a Line On You” circa 1970:

In the Event of an Event ...
We’ve discussed various ways to inform your contacts about your band, your recordings, upcoming gigs. But MySpace provides yet another way to get the word out: the Event. This option is located under the “More” tab on your MySpace profile screen. Place your cursor over the tab, select “Events” to open the Events home screen. MySpace Featured Events are displayed here, which may or may not be music-related. You also have the option of browsing existing events that have been created for the MySpace community by other members. Planning a trip, and want to find out what’s happening at your destination city? Enter the country and postal code. Looking for an activity for a specific date? Select the Start/End dates from the dropdown menu.
Now, let’s get up close and personal, with events relating to you and your profile. At the left side of the screen is the following menu:
Each of these is self-explanatory, and the middle two are particularly welcome to those of us who tend to maintain multiple reminder lists and...

There I was, just browsing in my profile, catching up on a few comments, blogs, et cetera … and something caught my eye. A fellow MySpace performer had received a review that they decided to share. As you probably know, there are several ways this can be done – within a blog, which will send a notification to all your friends; a Bulletin, which is less intrusive but noticeable; or, in the case of this particular example, within a frame called Friend Updates. This section appears in your page, or you can access it as a whole screen through the toolbar at the top of your page, under the “Friends” menu. Hover the cursor over “Friends,” select “Friend Updates” from the dropdown menu, and it’ll take you to the listing. As far as I can tell from my own experience, the screen provides updates that have occurred during the past five days. Updates can consist of many things – for example, you’ll see notification that someone has posted new photos to their profile and you can take a look with a simple click of a link; or perhaps someone has added a new song to their profile, or a video. You’ll even find mention of who’s become friends with who (or is it whom). You might even see yourself – as I did in one of a series of newly-uploaded photos from the Dewey Beach Music Conference in Delaware last month.
And sometimes opportunity will come knockin’.
In this case, it was in the form of a review. One of my esteemed friends had received a glowing review for their latest CD, and they had posted the review, including the link to the original source. I clicked on the link and discovered a reviewer I’d never heard of, someone who just might appreciate my music as well. I’ve made a note of the link and plan to contact the writer. Then, perhaps soon, another MySpace musician will see this writer’s link connected with a review I’ve received, thereby perpetuating traffic for the reviewer as well as informing more readers of my product.
Another opportunity is a performer’s mention of a recent or upcoming show. Any musician worth his salt will include all the info that’s fit to print about the venue. Check it out, maybe it’s a place that would be suitable for you and yours. You may get a gig, the venue will get increased word of cyber-mouth, everyone’s happy. Still another unexpected source of interaction is a link to a music festival or conference, such as the aforementioned Dewey Beach Music Conference. Click on the link for the conference, and you’ll learn all about the conference itself, when it takes place, submission instructions, whether you might participate in future events, and so on. Then, as in the post for this conference, there’s GoGirls Music.com, the group that posted the photos in the first place to promote their showcase. Check out these pix, and you can learn about the conference, the GoGirls Music group, and the individual artists who were part of the show. See an interesting artist you think you may want to share a gig with someday? Contact them, send them a Friends invite, talk about future gig plans. I could go on and on.
Keep a notepad handy as you browse the Friend Updates section. You never know where their fresh information may lead you.

Welcome to the second half of MySpace Networking 101! Last time, I was waxing enthusiastic on the benefits of networking with fellow MySpace members, how the community as a whole can work together to share information on how to change the look of your page, help spread the word about upcoming events, notify fans of a new CD in the works and when it might be available for sale/download, and so on. Just as you would with other networking opportunities (e.g., job fairs, workshops), keep an open mind – expand your horizons, get out there and explore. Communicate with a wide variety of people, even if at first you think they’re not necessarily on the same “page” as you. You never know where a connection will lead, or what opportunities may arise from a simple cordial greeting. And don’t forget to reciprocate! You can never be too much in the black in your karma bank, no matter who you are.
In conclusion, I present ten more names:
So you’re new to the MySpace Music neighborhood. You’ve set up your page just the way you want it, at least for the time being. (The beauty of it being that you can make changes to the layout as time goes on, if you so desire.) But let’s say you’ve established your little turf and now you’re ready to invite people over for a Space-warming. Obviously, the best place to start is with contacts you already know. Don’t worry if they’re not musicians, invite them anyway, thereby initiating the MySpace cause and effect – your new friends’ friends will see your profile, perhaps check it out and possibly send a request to be added to your list of friends. Then those friends’ friends will see your profile, check it out, ad infinitum. And it works both ways – you will read new profiles, find new friends to invite to your list, and so on. The circle of MySpace life :-)
After an initial surge of activity, you may experience a lull. You can easily wait it out and eventually things will pick up again; someone will see your...
