Is it MySpace or CraigsList?

Myriad networking via Bulletins for fun and profit.

One never knows what one will find in the offing when perusing MySpace. I probably shouldn’t be surprised by this, but lately for the first time I’m noticing that the Bulletins section is being used for announcements other than gigs, radio play information, and so on. This morning I found an ad for an apartment near a Chicago-based recording studio (“Musicians Welcome!”); a classic little black dress for sale; and an announcement from one comely young lass informing the world (our little corner of it, anyway) that she will “wash the breeding heap of socks” under her bed … tomorrow.

his is not to say the Bulletins are a waste of time. One day, amidst the announcements for shows, CDs and band merchandise, I stumbled upon a link from a DJ for a YouTube video that was of great nostalgic interest to me. It was a video of Spirit, the Brit band who gave us songs such as “Nature’s Way” and “I Got a Line On You” circa 1970:

This video is from 1986, increasing my interest because, that very same year,...

In the Event of an Event ...

Another option for social planning.

We’ve discussed various ways to inform your contacts about your band, your recordings, upcoming gigs. But MySpace provides yet another way to get the word out: the Event. This option is located under the “More” tab on your MySpace profile screen. Place your cursor over the tab, select “Events” to open the Events home screen. MySpace Featured Events are displayed here, which may or may not be music-related. You also have the option of browsing existing events that have been created for the MySpace community by other members. Planning a trip, and want to find out what’s happening at your destination city? Enter the country and postal code. Looking for an activity for a specific date? Select the Start/End dates from the dropdown menu.

Now, let’s get up close and personal, with events relating to you and your profile. At the left side of the screen is the following menu:

  • Event Invites
  • Events I’ve Posted
  • Events I’m Attending
  • Create Event

  • Each of these is self-explanatory, and the middle two are particularly welcome to those of us who tend to maintain multiple reminder lists and...

Drop and Give Me Twenty Names (Part 1)
By Pamela Richardson

Oh yeah, great band, I heard ‘em on MySpace …

Can MySpace help make you a household name? It couldn’t hurt! That MySpace Music is one level playing field … where else could a humble singer songwriter such as yours truly find herself discussing motion picture soundtrack production with the brilliant Michael Nyman, or swapping Comments with the Sir Douglas Quintet? MySpace Music even allows me the chance to embrace my inner teenybopper: one of my friends was a heavy-duty crush during my wonder years, none other than ex-Monkee Peter Tork. (I can’t describe how over-the-moon I would’ve been had this been possible at the height of the Monkees’ heyday – I daresay the decibels of the resulting teen squealing would’ve redirected a glacier or two.)

But MySpace is all about getting the name out there, right? The perfect place to hear and be heard. I’ve already touched upon the joys of surfing and discovering new music. Another way to expand your circle is to connect with performers with whom you share a gig. I’ve done this myself, as well as had others contact me. Connecting after the gig is fine, but connecting before the gig is a great ice-breaker; you can arrive at the venue, armed with some knowledge of your co-stars’ music, and be ready to chat. The process is also quite helpful if you’re performing with a band or artists you’ve never seen before; check out their profiles before the show, and you’re far less likely to confuse them with waitstaff, club managers or sound techs.

Thus, as indicated in the title of this piece, I offer you the first ten of twenty names – some performers I’ve been fortunate enough to experience, either initially via MySpace, or from connecting through a shared gig or showcase:

Check ‘em out, you might find a new favorite. Tell ‘em Pammy sent ya! And stay tuned for the conclusion of this list in my next piece. Call it a cliffhanger; well, that’s a bit dramatic, maybe more of a bluff-hanger. Either way, I promise I won’t end with it all being “just a dream.”

- Pam

Heard the Songs? Check Out the Profile!

Collecting MySpace contacts in a roundabout manner

It’s amazing what can result from one little song. I wrote a simple, melancholy love song years ago called “Leaves” – it was released as part of a six-song acoustic solo EP called Spaghetti Midwestern. It wasn’t released on a label, it was an independent project, limited run, a modest budget for the recording, artwork, promotions, and so on. It’s still available from a few sources, myself included, though I’ve nearly run out of them and won’t do another run. Instead, I plan to re-release the six songs (with other tunes in a similar style) on a new CD next year, on Spade Kitty Records (http://www.myspace.com/spadekittyrecords) – the Chicago indie label that carries my CD with my band, The Pralines.

Anyway, now and then I still receive queries for this humble little effort, and the song “Leaves” appears to be the most popular tune on the disk. It captivated one listener so much, he decided to contact me about covering it on a CD project he was planning. The gent’s name is Ron Martin, from North Carolina, and he was planning a recording to benefit the Liddy Shriver...

Drop and Give Me Twenty Names (Part 2)

Welcome to the second half of MySpace Networking 101! Last time, I was waxing enthusiastic on the benefits of networking with fellow MySpace members, how the community as a whole can work together to share information on how to change the look of your page, help spread the word about upcoming events, notify fans of a new CD in the works and when it might be available for sale/download, and so on. Just as you would with other networking opportunities (e.g., job fairs, workshops), keep an open mind – expand your horizons, get out there and explore. Communicate with a wide variety of people, even if at first you think they’re not necessarily on the same “page” as you. You never know where a connection will lead, or what opportunities may arise from a simple cordial greeting. And don’t forget to reciprocate! You can never be too much in the black in your karma bank, no matter who you are.

In conclusion, I present ten more names:
