Is it MySpace or CraigsList?

Myriad networking via Bulletins for fun and profit.

One never knows what one will find in the offing when perusing MySpace. I probably shouldn’t be surprised by this, but lately for the first time I’m noticing that the Bulletins section is being used for announcements other than gigs, radio play information, and so on. This morning I found an ad for an apartment near a Chicago-based recording studio (“Musicians Welcome!”); a classic little black dress for sale; and an announcement from one comely young lass informing the world (our little corner of it, anyway) that she will “wash the breeding heap of socks” under her bed … tomorrow.

his is not to say the Bulletins are a waste of time. One day, amidst the announcements for shows, CDs and band merchandise, I stumbled upon a link from a DJ for a YouTube video that was of great nostalgic interest to me. It was a video of Spirit, the Brit band who gave us songs such as “Nature’s Way” and “I Got a Line On You” circa 1970:

This video is from 1986, increasing my interest because, that very same year,...

In the Event of an Event ...

Another option for social planning.

We’ve discussed various ways to inform your contacts about your band, your recordings, upcoming gigs. But MySpace provides yet another way to get the word out: the Event. This option is located under the “More” tab on your MySpace profile screen. Place your cursor over the tab, select “Events” to open the Events home screen. MySpace Featured Events are displayed here, which may or may not be music-related. You also have the option of browsing existing events that have been created for the MySpace community by other members. Planning a trip, and want to find out what’s happening at your destination city? Enter the country and postal code. Looking for an activity for a specific date? Select the Start/End dates from the dropdown menu.

Now, let’s get up close and personal, with events relating to you and your profile. At the left side of the screen is the following menu:

  • Event Invites
  • Events I’ve Posted
  • Events I’m Attending
  • Create Event

  • Each of these is self-explanatory, and the middle two are particularly welcome to those of us who tend to maintain multiple reminder lists and...

Maintaining a peaceful MySpace co-existence

Generally, I think most people play well with others. It’s a simple matter of “do unto others” – three little words that never fall out of fashion. Keeping this in mind throughout all aspects of life is good practice, so it stands to reason that interactions in the MySpace community are served equally well by this sage advice. Here are a few checkpoints for exercising MySpace manners:

  • Comments: A friend’s Comments section is an ideal place to express admiration for a fellow artist; it’s also the perfect tool to thank your new friend for adding you or for accepting your request. I know we’re all busy, but try to take the time to post a brief Comment when you receive or become a new friend. You’ll immediately make a good impression, and your profile will instantly become prominent to other friends who visit your new friend’s page. They may like what they see and contact you, thereby continuing the circle of MySpace life …

  • Approve/Deny: You’ve received notification of a potential new friend. You eagerly click on the “New Friend Requests” link, and there you see a name, picture, something that makes you arch the ol’ brow. You open the user’s page, and your confusion grows … you think, What in the world made this person think we would have anything in common? You return to your previous screen, puzzled and uncertain whether to accept the request. Our advice – don’t worry! Remember, you aren’t obligated to accept everyone who crosses your path. The MySpace team wisely set this feature so that the requester does not receive notification if their request is denied. (I’ve denied one persistent party three times now; their profile is a sales gimmick page for a pyramid-type business venture. I definitely don’t have the time or energy for that!) Sure, it’s wonderful to see those big numbers under our “Friends” lists; but think quality, not quantity. By the same token, before you dismiss a dubious request too quickly, check the “Mutual Friends” link in the request. If the two of you have enough mutual friends, perhaps you’re being too hasty. This person may turn out to be a very welcome addition to your group.

  • “What I meant to say was … ” Take care with the written word! While dashing about MySpace, it’s easy to become complacent, compulsively firing off blogs, Bulletins, and so on. Sometimes, in our zeal to communicate, we don’t express ourselves as intended, or something doesn’t come out quite right. And, as we know from watching the news, a few rash e-mail messages distributed to the wrong recipients can bring down empires. Granted, the results of a gaffe in the MySpace community probably won’t be quite so dire; still, take your time when sharing information, thoughts, opinions. Read each post carefully before sending it out into the world; read and re-read. Make sure you don’t mind ANYONE seeing your words – it isn’t called the World Wide Web for nothing.

  • These are just a few suggestions. Let us know if you’ve had an experience in which you wish either you or someone else had responded differently; or maybe you figured out a way to rectify an awkward situation. A community is only as good as its citizens. Help keep MySpace Music tidy!

Life of the Party

How a simple MySpace Music conversation turned into a gig

I’ve spoken at length about the benefits of meeting new people via MySpace. Considering that it started out as a meeting place for like-minded people to share interests, it makes sense that it would bloom into a natural choice for a method of networking for professional endeavors as well. One recent example is something that happened as a result of an e-mail exchange between two band members of a similar genre. The music style is psychedelic; the bands are The High Dials of Montreal (http://www.myspace.com/thehighdials) and Red Plastic Buddha of Chicago (http://www.myspace.com/redplasticbuddha).

High Dial Trevor Anderson, disappointed at finding the Chicago market booked solid during the dates the band had set for their tour, decided to reach out to the MySpace Music community. His query was answered by Red Plastic Buddha leader Tim Ferguson. Already a High Dials fan, Ferguson was more than eager to do what he could to help the band pin down a Chicago date. Ferguson’s investigation led to not only a venue for The High Dials, but a chance to share the gig with them. The venue is Stereophonic Studios...

Background Check

Just copy and wallpaper-paste …

Setting up the initial profile in MySpace is a breeze – hey, if I can do it, anybody can. But sooner or later, after coming across other profiles you admire, or perhaps finding yourself becoming just plain bored with the look of your page, you may want to do something to fight the blahs. One if the easiest ways to freshen a room is a new coat of paint … and one of the easiest ways to brighten up your profile is to create a new background.

It’s funny how long it took me to do this, because it’s really not difficult … but in my early days of setting up my profile, I feared I would be unable to work with backgrounds because I lacked HTML or CSS experience. (I have since gained a little of both, just enough to be dangerous.) However, some helpful computer hotdogs out there have taken it upon themselves to make the task of virtual wallpapering easier for us all. Surprisingly, there is no feature within MySpace to tell you how to do this (someone out there please correct me on this if I’m wrong)....
