Is it MySpace or CraigsList?
One never knows what one will find in the offing when perusing MySpace. I probably shouldn’t be surprised by this, but lately for the first time I’m noticing that the Bulletins section is being used for announcements other than gigs, radio play information, and so on. This morning I found an ad for an apartment near a Chicago-based recording studio (“Musicians Welcome!”); a classic little black dress for sale; and an announcement from one comely young lass informing the world (our little corner of it, anyway) that she will “wash the breeding heap of socks” under her bed … tomorrow.
his is not to say the Bulletins are a waste of time. One day, amidst the announcements for shows, CDs and band merchandise, I stumbled upon a link from a DJ for a YouTube video that was of great nostalgic interest to me. It was a video of Spirit, the Brit band who gave us songs such as “Nature’s Way” and “I Got a Line On You” circa 1970:

In the Event of an Event ...
We’ve discussed various ways to inform your contacts about your band, your recordings, upcoming gigs. But MySpace provides yet another way to get the word out: the Event. This option is located under the “More” tab on your MySpace profile screen. Place your cursor over the tab, select “Events” to open the Events home screen. MySpace Featured Events are displayed here, which may or may not be music-related. You also have the option of browsing existing events that have been created for the MySpace community by other members. Planning a trip, and want to find out what’s happening at your destination city? Enter the country and postal code. Looking for an activity for a specific date? Select the Start/End dates from the dropdown menu.
Now, let’s get up close and personal, with events relating to you and your profile. At the left side of the screen is the following menu:
- Event Invites
- Events I’ve Posted
- Events I’m Attending
- Create Event

There I was, just browsing in my profile, catching up on a few comments, blogs, et cetera … and something caught my eye. A fellow MySpace performer had received a review that they decided to share. As you probably know, there are several ways this can be done – within a blog, which will send a notification to all your friends; a Bulletin, which is less intrusive but noticeable; or, in the case of this particular example, within a frame called Friend Updates. This section appears in your page, or you can access it as a whole screen through the toolbar at the top of your page, under the “Friends” menu. Hover the cursor over “Friends,” select “Friend Updates” from the dropdown menu, and it’ll take you to the listing. As far as I can tell from my own experience, the screen provides updates that have occurred during the past five days. Generally, I think most people play well with others. It’s a simple matter of “do unto others” – three little words that never fall out of fashion. Keeping this in mind throughout all aspects of life is good practice, so it stands to reason that interactions in the MySpace community are served equally well by this sage advice. Here are a few checkpoints for exercising MySpace manners:
- Comments: A friend’s Comments section is an ideal place to express admiration for a fellow artist; it’s also the perfect tool to thank your new friend for adding you or for accepting your request. I know we’re all busy, but try to take the time to post a brief Comment when you receive or become a new friend. You’ll immediately make a good impression, and your profile will instantly become prominent to other friends who visit your new friend’s page. They may like what they see and contact you, thereby continuing the circle of MySpace life …
